A new era of luxury jewellery in Doncaster has arrived
That’s because our store in the city has undergone a major transformation.
Previously known as H. L. Brown and Bell Brothers, the shop is now rebranded as simply H. L. Brown Doncaster when it reopened on Wednesday May 3, 2023.
Our Doncaster heritage explained
In 1781, well-respected watchmaker Joseph Bell established his Bell Brothers business. Previously Joseph had worked under the famous horologist Thomas Mudge, the inventor of the lever escapement. That was the single biggest improvement to watches in history and is still a crucial feature of mechanical watches today.
It wasn’t until the 1920s when Bell Brothers joined forces with H. L. Brown. H. L. Brown was also founded by a watchmaker, Polish migrant Harris Leon Brown, in 1861. At one time, the combined businesses had two separate stores in the city of Doncaster. In 2014, they united in one shop based at the entrance to Frenchgate shopping centre on St Sepulchre Gate.
Just under a decade later, that same store has undergone a high-end refurbishment and the reopening this month marks the next chapter of luxury jewellery in Doncaster.

Work to create a premium retail experience through the Doncaster store’s face-lift has been going on behind the scenes.
As you can see from the attached architect’s designs, the rejuvenation will provide customers with a comfortable, discreet and modern environment in which to browse and purchase luxury jewellery. New display cases, soft furnishings and seating areas have been created as well as a more private, redesigned consultation area.
